According to Cointelegraph, over than 300 global experts of technology, artificial intelligence (AI), digital ethics and child safety, among others, collaborated. It is believed that they have signed an open letter urging governments to take “immediate action” to tackle deepfakes.
Sources revealed that on February 21, 2024, a letter titled “Disrupting the Deepfake Supply Chain,” was released. This letter is expected to urge governments, policymakers and political leaders to “impose obligations” in the supply chain to halt the proliferation of deepfakes.
“Deepfakes are a huge threat to human society and are already causing growing harm to individuals, communities, and the functioning of democracy,” Andrew Critch, an AI researcher, University of California, Berkeley, department of electrical engineering and computer Science and lead author of the letter, explained.
Furthermore, in response to the deepfakes involving pop singer Taylor Swift circulating in social media platforms, lawmakers in the United States (US) appealed for legislation to criminalise the production of deepfake images, concluded Cointelegraph.
