The UK’s Minister, Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon, is currently in Delhi to reaffirm the UK’s dedication to a “free and open” Indo-Pacific during a crucial foreign policy meeting. Lord (Tariq) Ahmad, who serves as the Minister for the Middle East, South Asia, UN, and the Prime Minister’s Special Representative on Preventing Sexual Violence, has arrived in India today (21 February) to lead the UK delegation at the prestigious Raisina Dialogue.

According to an official statement issued by the UK High Commission, New Delhi on Feb 21, 2024, his primary objective is to reaffirm the UK’s unwavering commitment to a “free and open” Indo-Pacific, which is crucial for future security and aligns with the Prime Minister’s economic agenda.

Amidst the backdrop of escalating global instability, Lord Ahmad has stressed the vital connection between prosperity and security in both the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions. And has underscored the significance of acknowledging the second anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, highlighting its profound impact on global energy and food prices, thereby reinforcing the intrinsic link between Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific security.

Against the backdrop of an increasingly unstable world, Lord Ahmad asserts the UK’s determination to collaborate with its partners in addressing the root causes of conflict. Furthermore, he emphasized the UK’s steadfast commitment, alongside its allies, to safeguarding freedom of navigation and facilitating the uninterrupted flow of trade.

The UK delegation at the Raisina Dialogue boasts the inclusion of Admiral Sir Ben Key, who will participate in a series of high-level meetings with leaders of the Indian Armed Forces. These discussions aim to assess the progress of the UK-India defence partnership and deliberate on the various global security challenges confronting both nations.

According to the official statement, during his visit, Lord Ahmad will also take a moment to commemorate the second anniversary of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Despite the conflict entering its third year, the UK’s support for Ukraine remains resolute and unwavering.

Additionally, Lord Ahmad will engage in discussions with key Indian officials to underscore the robustness of the UK-India trade partnership. He will explore potential avenues for collaboration, particularly in the energy sector, and express mutual determination to pursue an ambitious trade deal, reflecting the strong political will on both sides.
