On Tuesday (April 23, 2024), India successfully tested a new model of its Medium-Range Ballistic Missile.
“The Strategic Forces Command successfully conducted a user trial of the latest version of the Medium-Range Ballistic Missile on April 23, 2024. This test confirmed the Command’s operational readiness and demonstrated the effectiveness of newly developed technologies.”
The Ministry of Defence announced that the recent test launch confirmed the missile’s operational effectiveness and its integration with new technologies.
The test was carried out under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command, according to the ministry’s statement. Additionally, sources in the defence and security establishment explained that this new Medium-Range Ballistic Missile is not part of the ‘Agni’ series of missile systems.
IAF’s Advancements
Last week, the Indian Air Force achieved a significant enhancement in its capabilities by successfully conducting a test firing of an air-launched ballistic missile. This missile has the ability to strike targets located at distances exceeding 250 kilometers.
It is speculated that the missile tested by the Indian Air Force in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the Crystal Maze 2, an air-launched ballistic missile of Israeli origin, also known as ROCKS.
According to reports in the public domain citing senior sources within the defence and security establishment said that a Su-30 MKI fighter jet successfully conducted a missile test at a range located in the Andaman Islands territory.
Preparations for the missile test were organized in a region under the jurisdiction of the tri-services Andaman and Nicobar Command, which is led by an Air Force officer.
The missile, launched from a Su-30 fighter by the IAF, travels upward first and then rapidly moves toward its target.
What is Crystal Maze 2? All you want to know
“Crystal Maze 2 is an advanced air-launched missile developed by Israel, designed for precision strikes on high-value targets. This missile is capable of engaging heavily fortified positions from long distances, ensuring minimal collateral damage. It is renowned for its accuracy and reliability in combat scenarios, making it a preferred choice for missions requiring surgical precision. The missile’s integration into various platforms enhances its operational flexibility and effectiveness in diverse combat environments,” explains Girish Linganna, Aerospace & Defence Analyst.
According to Linganna, “Crystal 2 operates effectively in GPS-denied areas and can breach regions secured by air defense systems. This system allows for the choice between penetration or blast fragmentation warheads, making it suitable for targeting both surface and heavily fortified underground facilities.”
India is currently developing the Crystal Maze 2 missile. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully conducted tests on this missile and aims to procure it in large numbers under the Make in India initiative. This move highlights India’s dedication to achieving self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing.
