Russia remains committed to delivering the remaining S-400 Triumf air defence units to India by 2025-2026, Deputy Chief of Mission in India Roman Babushkin confirmed on Monday. Speaking to PTI, Babushkin underscored the effectiveness of the S-400 system, noting reports of its “very efficient” performance during recent India-Pakistan tensions.
India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 for five squadrons of the advanced S-400 system, capable of neutralising multiple aerial threats at long ranges. Three of the five units have already been delivered, with the final two expected within the next two years.
Babushkin said the contract is progressing on schedule and reaffirmed Russia’s long-standing defence partnership with India. “We have a long history of collaboration. Air defence and anti-drone systems are key areas where we see promising future cooperation,” he stated.
In response to evolving regional threats, particularly the use of drones during cross-border skirmishes, Babushkin highlighted Russia’s experience and technological advancements in counter-drone measures. “Our systems are being constantly modernised. There is a joint interest from both sides to explore cooperation in this area,” he said, adding that anti-drone technology is already part of the ongoing India-Russia defence dialogue.
He also signalled openness to expanding strategic collaboration in air defence. “We are open for promoting this partnership and expanding dialogue in these areas,” Babushkin noted, pointing to the current global security climate as a backdrop for deeper ties.
Babushkin also said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov may visit India soon, although final dates have yet to be confirmed. “It can happen anytime this month,” he said.
