Modi’s high-profile visit began on Monday, marking the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Vladimir Putin. This was Modi’s first trip to Russia since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The visit included a private dinner hosted by Putin at his residence on the outskirts of Moscow.
The Ukraine conflict featured prominently in their discussions. PM Modi emphasised that a resolution to the conflict could not be achieved on the battlefield, asserting that peace talks cannot succeed amidst violence. President Putin expressed gratitude for Modi’s efforts to facilitate a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
PM Modi’s Austria visit holds particular historical importance as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Austria in 41 years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been awarded Russia's highest civilian honor, the Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, by President Vladimir Putin.

After the bilateral talks with Putin concluded, Prime Minister Modi set off for Kremlin visit.
PM Modi expressed gratitude to Russian President Putin for fuel support during the global crisis, stating that when the world faced a fuel challenge, Russia's support helped India meet the petrol and diesel needs of its citizens. "Not just this, the world should accept that India-Russia agreement regarding fuel played a big role in bringing stability to the international market," the PM said.
During his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, PM Narendra Modi said that for restoration of peace, India is ready to cooperate in all ways possible. "I assure you and the world community that India is in favour of peace. Listening to my friend Putin talk about peace yesterday, gives me hope. I would like to say to my media friends - Possible," PM Modi added.
PM Narendra Modi said that he held detailed discussion with Russian President Putin over death of children amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. PM Modi said, "Be it war, conflicts, terror attacks - everyone who believes in humanity is pained when there is loss of lives. But when innocent children are murdered, when we see innocent children dying, it is heart-wrenching. That pain is immense."
"I have had ties with Russia as well as you since the past 2.5 decades. In about 10 years, we have met 17 times. In the last 25 years, we have had around 22 bilateral meetings. This reflects the depth of our relations," the PM said.

During the bilateral meeting with Vladimir Putin, PM Narendra Modi spoke on the issue of terrorism. The PM said that India has been facing terrorism since last 40-50 years and understands "how horrible and disgusting terrorism is". "So, when terror incidents occurred in Moscow, when terror incidents occurred in Dagestan, I can imagine how deep its pain would be. I strongly condemn all kinds of terrorism,” the PM said.
PM Modi and President Putin are at VDNKh Exhibition Centre as both countries are planning to build six high-power nuclear plants as well as low-power nuclear plants in India.
After concluding the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Vladimir Putin, PM Modi will head for Austria on July 9. It will be the maiden visit for an Indian prime minister to Austria after more than 40 years.
PM Modi has declared that India will be opening two consulates in Russia, one in Kazar and the other one in Yekaterinburg. Both Russian cities have their respective significance. Kazan is known as an educational and cultural hub and also as a developing economic centre in Russia. On the other hand, Yekaterinburg is Russia one of the fourth-largest city and has also hosted FIFA World Cup matches, as per a PTI report.
