According to the Indian Navy spokesperson, Commander Vivek Madhwal, the Survey Ship Nirdeksha will be inducted into the Navy fleet in Visakhapatnam on December 18. The special thing about this ship is that it has been built with more than 80 percent indigenous materials.

The ceremony will be hosted by the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and will be attended by distinguished guests including senior naval officers and GRSE representatives.
Why is the Navy’s survey ship Nirikshak special?
GRSE Kolkata has built the survey vessel ‘Nirdeshak’. Nirdeshak weighs 3800 tonnes and is 110 metres long. Nirdeshak is powered by two diesel engines. Nirdeshak is equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic survey equipment.
This boat is designed to conduct hydrographic surveys, aid navigation and support maritime operations. The first survey vessel was retired after nearly 32 years of service.
The ‘Nirdeshak’ research vessel is the second ship of the large survey vessel project which has been built by GRSE. Earlier, Sandhayak was inducted into the Navy this year. Along with this, GRSE is also building survey vessels named Ichhak and Sanshodhan under this project.
