In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), the mother of Suchir Balaji publicly rejected the findings of his autopsy report, calling it inconsistent and flawed. She wrote: “We received the autopsy report last Friday. Our counsel and we disagree with their decision. There are tons of inconsistencies in their decision. Underlying assumptions are not supporting the facts in reports. We continue our investigation. We have sent the hair found in the apartment for testing. We are fighting for justice and not backing up.”

The family remains determined to uncover the truth and has sent forensic evidence, including hair found in Balaji’s apartment, for further testing, the tweet explained.

Who was Suchir Balaji?

Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former software developer at OpenAI, was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on November 26, 2024. He was a rising name in the tech industry and had played a key role in OpenAI’s advancements, particularly in developing ChatGPT.

Before his death, Balaji had reportedly expressed concerns about potential ethical and legal issues related to OpenAI’s AI training data. Some reports suggest he was preparing to testify in legal proceedings concerning copyright violations in AI development. His sudden death, therefore, has raised several questions.

Official ruling and family’s dispute

The San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a suicide, citing a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities found no signs of forced entry or immediate evidence of foul play. However, Balaji’s family strongly disputes this conclusion. They argue that several inconsistencies in the autopsy report indicate a deeper issue.

His mother has been vocal about her doubts, claiming that the underlying assumptions in the report do not align with the facts. She and her legal counsel believe that a more thorough investigation is necessary.

Ongoing investigation and next steps

Determined to seek justice, the family continues their independent investigation. The forensic testing of the hair sample found in his apartment could provide crucial evidence in the case. As the case unfolds, many await new developments that could challenge the official ruling and bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding Suchir Balaji’s death.
