Axis Bank reported a major senior leadership overhaul, Neeraj Gambhir appointed as Executive Director on Friday, after Arjun Chaudhary, who was leading Affluent Banking, Cards, Payments, and Retail Lending at the bank, resigned from his position as Group Executive. 

His appointment will be effective from August 4, while Chaudhary will be relieved of his duties at the bank on August 31. 

Why did Arjun Chaudhary resign?

Arjun Chaudhary joined Axis Bank in March 2023 as Group Executive- Affluent Banking, NRI, Cards & Payments. Before that, he was associated with Citi India for 29 years in various positions. At the time of his departure from Citi India, he was heading the consumer banking operation in India. 

In his resignation letter to Amitabh Chaudhary, CEO of Axis Bank, Arjun Chaudhary said that he is leaving the bank to pursue an entrepreneurial path. In the resignation letter, Chaudhary said, “This has been a difficult decision, given how rewarding this chapter has been. But the time is right for a new challenge.”

Who is Neeraj Gambhir?

Neeraj Gambhir, the 53-year-old Industry veteran, has 30 years of experience in the finance sector. He joined the Axis Bank in 2020 as Group Executive and led the Treasury, Markets and Wholesale banking product of the bank. 

Prior to joining Axis Bank, Gambhir was Managing Director of Nomura India, where he headed the company’s fixed Income business. Before that, he was Managing Director of Lehman Brothers India, where he was responsible for setting up the credit card business of the bank in India. 

Besides Axis Bank’s board of directors, he is also part of the board of directors of Axis Asset Management and Axis Pension Fund Management. He is the Chairman of the Board of Axis Pension Fund Management.

Neerja Gambhir has completed his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and has completed his Master’s from IIM Lucknow in Business Management.
