Mahashivratri, a significant festival in the Hindu religion, falls on Wednesday, February 26, 2025. Will banks be operational on this date? In the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank holiday calendar, the day is recognised under the ‘Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act’ category. While all banking institutions, both private and public, in many states will remain shut on Wednesday. However, since this is not a national holiday, banks in several other states will remain operational as usual.
Banks will stay shut in Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Belapur, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad – Telangana, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla, Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram, on the occasion of Mahashivratri.
Also, even as banks in these regions will be closed, online banking services will remain operational, and customers can still access banking services via net banking, ATMs, mobile applications, and bank websites.
The RBI releases the bank holiday schedule for every month and while all banks across the country are closed on all national holidays, Sundays, second Saturdays, and fourth Saturdays of each month, other holidays see banks in regions specific to the festival being non-operational during that particular occasion. All bank branches are open on the first, third and fifth Saturdays unless there is a holiday declared in the RBI holiday list. Bank holidays in India vary from state to state.
Earlier, the RBI had released the bank holiday schedule for the month of February. The month has a total of 14 bank holidays and these include public holidays, regional holidays, and regular closures on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays.
