Bank Holidays August  2024: Banks across many states and cities will remain closed on Monday, August 26 due to the festival of Janmashtami. The holiday will not be uniformly observed nationwide with several major cities keeping their banking services operational. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), financial institutions in many cities will remain shut to mark Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Jayanthi. The holiday falls under the RBI’s recognized categories for bank closures.

Major cities where banks will remain shut today include Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad – Telangana, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla and Srinagar. This closure affects both public and private sector banks in these regions.

Banks in key financial hubs, Mumbai, New Delhi, will remain operational as usual. Additionally, states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Kerala, and Goa will see normal banking operations today.

Besides August 26, August saw a total of 13 holidays during the month, including public holidays, regional holidays, and regular closures on Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays. August included festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami and also Independence Day. RBI categorises bank holidays into three types: Negotiable Instruments Act, Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.

The RBI has advised customers to check with their local branches for specific details, as bank holidays can vary by state due to regional considerations. Despite physical branch closures, online and mobile banking services are to remain functional, allowing customers to perform various transactions remotely.

The coming month, that is, September will have 15 bank holidays, which include national and regional holidays as well as Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays.

August 3 (Saturday): Ker Puja – Banks will remain closed on August 3 in Agartala.

August 8 (Thursday): Tendong Lho Rum Faat – Banks will stay closed in Gangtok.

August 13 (Tuesday): Patriot’s Day – Banks will remain shut in Imphal.

August 15 (Thursday): Independence Day/Parsi New Year (Shahenshahi) – Considering it’s a national holiday, banks will stay closed across the country, in all the states on the date. 

August 19 (Monday): Raksha Bandhan/Jhulana Purnima/Birthday of Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur – Banks will remain closed in Agartala, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow and Shimla. 

August 20 (Tuesday): Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi – Banks will stay shut in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. 

August 26 (Monday): Janmashtami (Shravan Vad-8)/Krishna Jayanthi – Banks will remain closed in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Hyderabad – Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad – Telangana, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla and Srinagar.
