A 5.1-magnitude earthquake hit Assam’s Morigaon district early on Monday morning, according to the National Centre for Seismology. The quake struck at around 4:17 am, with its epicentre in Morigaon at a depth of about 50 km.
Officials said there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property.

However, people in parts of central Assam said they felt mild to moderate tremors. Authorities said they are keeping a close watch on the situation, according to a report by PTI.
The tremors were also felt in neighbouring districts such as Kamrup Metropolitan, Nagaon, East and West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, Dhubri, South Salmara-Mankachar and Goalpara, the report said.
Several districts on the northern bank of the Brahmaputra – including Darrang, Tamulpur, Sonitpur, Kamrup, Biswanath, Udalguri, Nalbari, Bajali, Barpeta, Baksa, Chirang, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Lakhimpur – also experienced the quake.
The earthquake was felt in parts of central-western Arunachal Pradesh, across Meghalaya, and in several areas of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal. Tremors were also reported from central-eastern Bhutan, parts of China and Bangladesh. The sudden shaking woke people from their sleep and forced many to rush out of their homes into open areas. The northeastern region lies in a high seismic zone, making it especially prone to earthquakes, it added.
