IndiGo Airlines is likely to commence flight operations from Sikkim’s Pakyong Airport in October, according to an official statement on Monday. Pakyong Airport Director, Sanjeev Kumar Singh, mentioned that the airline and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are currently assessing the commercial viability and conducting data analysis for the potential routes.
Singh revealed that IndiGo plans to operate flights connecting Pakyong Airport with Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore, and Hyderabad, a move expected to significantly boost tourism in Sikkim.
In addition, Singh mentioned that Nepal’s Buddha Air has expressed interest in launching daily flights between Kathmandu and Pakyong, though it is still awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.
Talks are also ongoing with other airlines like Blade Air and Jetwing regarding potential operations from Pakyong Airport this year. Singh noted that the Sikkim government is currently reviewing Blade Air’s proposal, while Jetwing has already been allocated a route from Guwahati to Pakyong under India’s Regional Connectivity Scheme. If conditions are favourable, Jetwing could start operations by November.
At present, SpiceJet is the only airline operating flights between Delhi, Kolkata, and Pakyong Airport.
