His focus on efficiency, operations, air safety as head of the FAA will reinforce IndiGo’s longstanding focus on operating at the highest levels.”
Bhatia further emphasised the importance of Whitaker’s international experience, adding, “Also, his extensive experience in international governmental affairs will be hugely instrumental as IndiGo continues its global expansion.”

Prior to his role as FAA Administrator, from which he resigned in January 2025, he served as Chief Operating Officer at Supernal, Hyundai’s advanced air mobility division, and as Senior Vice President – Alliances, International & Regulatory Affairs at United Airlines. His aviation career began as a lawyer with Trans World Airlines in New York.
A private pilot himself, Whitaker holds a juris doctorate degree from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Louisville.
Expressing his excitement about joining IndiGo, Whitaker said, “I am deeply honoured to have the privilege of joining the board of the world’s fastest growing airline on its way to become a global aviation giant.”
IndiGo currently operates a fleet of over 400 aircraft and runs more than 2,200 flights daily, solidifying its position as the largest airline in India. The appointment of a seasoned aviation expert like Michael Whitaker signals the airline’s continued focus on safety, efficiency, and its ambitious global expansion plans.
