The Thiruvananthapuram International airport recorded its highest number of passenger movement in a month after COVID-19 in December last year at over 4 lakh. 

During the specified timeframe, 2.42 lakh individuals were domestic travelers, and 1.72 lakh were international passengers out of a total of 4.14 lakh passengers, as stated by airport authorities. Comparing this period to the corresponding timeframe in 2022, there was a notable 26% rise in passenger volume, according to the authorities.

In the year 2023, Thiruvananthapuram airport witnessed a total of 41.48 lakh passengers, reflecting a 25% year-on-year traffic growth compared to the 33 lakh passengers recorded in 2022.

In anticipation of the escalating number of flights and passengers, the airport is proactively enhancing its infrastructure to ensure a smoother and enhanced travel experience, as mentioned in the statement.

Domestic airlines inducted 133 planes in 2023

Earlier this month, the DGCA said that domestic airlines increased their fleet by 133 planes, marking a 51% annual growth as they extended their networks to accommodate the escalating demand from passengers. Of these, 21 aircraft were acquired by carriers through wet lease agreements.

Last year, the scheduled operators inducted a total of 112 aircraft in their fleet against 81 aircraft inducted in 2022, marking an increase of 38%. 

In 2023, IndiGo and Air India placed orders for 970 planes collectively and India stood as one of the rapidly advancing civil aviation markets globally.

As of December 31, 2023, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reported a total of 16 Air Operator Certificate (AOC) holders, overseeing a combined fleet of 771 aircraft.
