The Veer Savarkar International Airport has installed an advanced automated parking system (AAPS) with a sensor-based boom barrier, CCTV and an automated ticket dispenser to provide travellers and passengers with a hassle-free car parking experience, an official said.

The AAPS will offer clear parking fees and drastically decrease the need for manual involvement in traffic management.

Four key points in the airport and parking lots will be used for time-stamping by the system, which will increase accuracy and transparency for both users and service providers.

Airport Director, Devender Yadav, said that this is a major milestone in the journey for automation, excellence and preparedness to start international flight operations from Port Blair. “AirAsia will operate its first international flight from Port Blair to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in November 2024. Presently, there are no international airlines operating from Port Blair,” Yadav added.

He further said that another significant flagship automation project, called Digi Yatra, is currently in the works. Based on facial recognition technology, this cutting-edge technology-based passenger processing solution allows people to proceed through airport checkpoints contactlessly and seamlessly.

At an anticipated cost of approximately Rs 707.73 crore, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) started construction on the new integrated terminal building (NITB) in Port Blair.

The airport can accommodate 1,200 passengers during peak hours and about 40 lakh passengers annually with a total built-up area of 40,837 sqm.
