The Noida International Airport successfully completed its first flight validation test today, marking a significant milestone towards the airport’s planned operations in the coming year. An IndiGo aircraft, departing from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport with only crew members on board, performed the test flight and landed on the runway after completing essential security checks. The aircraft was greeted with a water salute upon landing.
Located in Jewar, in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the airport is set to commence operations in April next year. Once operational, it will become the second major airport in the National Capital Region (NCR) after IGI Airport in Delhi.
“This was a prestigious project. Today the landing of the plane was a great achievement,” Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said.
Noida International Airport CEO Christoph Schnellmann expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the Airports Authority of India, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, and the Uttar Pradesh Government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, for their support. “We completed this project in record time, working together as one team,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the Jewar Airport in November 2021. The airport is being developed by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Swiss company Zurich Airport International AG, in collaboration with Noida International Airport Limited, which is managing the project on behalf of the Uttar Pradesh government.
Spanning 1,334 hectares, the airport’s first phase is expected to handle 12 million passengers annually. By the end of the decade, this number is projected to grow to 30 million, with a target of 70 million passengers in the years to follow.
The airport is well-connected to Greater Noida, Noida, and Delhi through the signal-free Yamuna Expressway, ensuring easy access for travelers.
