Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has capped off the year with an exceptional achievement, reporting an unprecedented 112 per cent recovery in passenger numbers during the holiday season. 

December 2023 witnessed a remarkable resurgence for the airport, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and welcoming 4.88 million passengers, showcasing a noteworthy 13 per cent growth compared to December 2019. This was the highest-ever passenger traffic for the airport, the aerodrome operator said in a statement.

165,258 travellers in one day

The peak of this success was reached on December 16, a day that marked the highest single-day passenger traffic in CSMIA’s history. A staggering 165,258 travellers passed through the airport, comprising 84,166 arrivals and 81,092 departures. This extraordinary feat underscores the airport’s capacity to handle substantial passenger volumes efficiently.

Air Traffic Movements at Mumbai International Airport 

Throughout the month, CSMIA recorded a total of 28,462 Air Traffic Movements (ATMs), with 7,287 dedicated to international routes and 21,175 on various domestic routes. The global appeal of CSMIA was evident in its passenger distribution, with 47 per cent arriving from the Middle East, 28 per cent from the Asia Pacific region, and 15 per cent from Europe.

Most-travelled airlines and destinations 

Leading the charge among airlines, IndiGo, Air India, and Vistara demonstrated exceptional performance on both domestic and international routes.

Among domestic destinations, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Goa emerged as the top choices for travelers, while internationally, Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi maintained their positions as favored hubs. The Mumbai-Delhi route alone witnessed an impressive traffic volume of 622,424 passengers, showcasing the sustained popularity of this critical air corridor.
