Flight operations at Mumbai airport were severely disrupted on Monday (July 8) due to heavy rains and low visibility, causing the suspension of runway operations for over an hour and the cancellation of 50 flights, according to a PTI report.
“Fifty flights have been cancelled till 11 am on Monday at the Mumbai airport due to low visibility and heavy rains. Of these, IndiGo had to cancel 42 flights, including 20 departing ones, while six flights of Air India including three arrivals were cancelled,” a source said.
IndiGo, Air India, Alliance Air flights affected
Among the affected flights, 42 were from IndiGo, including 20 departures, and six were from Air India, three of which were arrivals. Government-owned Alliance Air also had to cancel two flights, one departure and one arrival.
Several Mumbai-bound flights diverted
Earlier, 27 flights were diverted to nearby airports like Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, and Indore when runway operations were suspended from 2:22 am to 3:40 am.
Rain fury in Mumbai
In the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday, Mumbai recorded substantial rainfall with the island city receiving an average of 115.63 mm, while eastern and western parts recorded 168.68 mm and 165.93 mm respectively.
Govandi in eastern Mumbai recorded the highest rainfall at 315.6 mm, followed closely by Powai at 314.5 mm. In western Mumbai, Malpa Dongri in Andheri received 292.2 mm, and Chakala received 278.2 mm. Pratiksha Nagar in the island city recorded 220.2 mm, and Sewri Koliwada received 185.8 mm, according to official reports.
