Japan Airlines (JAL) has resolved a system malfunction caused by a large-scale cyberattack, assuring the customers that no data breaches or virus infections have taken place. The ticket sales for same day flights have started again. However, certain specific domestic flight services such as an upgrade option, airport standby continues to be unavailable.

In a social media post on X, JAL mentioned that, ‘’We have identified the reason and scope of the malfunction, and the system has been restored. The issue occurred due to large data attacks and did not result in any data leaks or virus infections. ‘’. Another update shared by the airlines stated, ‘’ticket sales for flights departing today has been resumed. For domestic flights leaving today , the airport standby service and Upgrade service on the JAL website as well as on the app are suspended. ‘’

The JAL has informed in the day that its network has been attacked, resulting in delays of upto an hour for at least 14 domestic flights and even affected some international flights, as reported by Kyodo News.

The problem started at 7:25 am, leading to suspension of ticket sales of all domestic and international flights for the day. Despite all the disruption, passengers who have booked their ticket for today were informed that their tickets remained valid. JAL is actively handling the aftermath of the attack and scrutinising the source of it. As per the latest report, the airline has managed to temporarily shutdown the compromised router that is considered to be the main reason of the incident. The investigation is currently being conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department that is enquiring about the source of the attack, as per the sources of Kyodo News.
