IndiGo marked 77 years of India’s independence with the induction of 77 female pilots into its Airbus and ATR fleets on Wednesday (August 14). This milestone brings the airline’s total number of female pilots to over 800.

The carrier welcomed 72 new female pilots to its Airbus fleet and 5 to its ATR fleet. This induction underscores IndiGo’s commitment to promoting gender diversity in aviation industry. 

14% of IndiGo pilots are women

With approximately 14 per cent of its pilots being women, IndiGo significantly outpaces the global average of 7-9 per cent female pilots.

Captain Ashim Mitra, Senior Vice President of Flight Operations at IndiGo, praised the airline’s dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.

In addition to its latest initiative, IndiGo has introduced several supportive measures, including life cycle initiatives that offer flexibility to female pilots with young children, allowing them to opt for reduced flying contracts.

As of March 31, 2024, IndiGo employs 36,860 permanent staff members, including 5,038 pilots and 9,363 cabin crew. This expansion of its female pilot workforce is part of the airline’s ongoing efforts to enhance inclusivity and support within the aviation industry.
