Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) in Ahmedabad, managed by Ahmedabad International Airport Limited (AIAL) under Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Ltd, has undertaken groundbreaking measures to enhance aviation safety. These initiatives, many of which are the first of their kind in India, have significantly reduced bird strikes, thereby safeguarding passengers and aircraft.

What Are Bird Strikes?

Bird strikes are a serious aviation safety concern. They occur when birds collide with aircraft. These incidents can damage critical components like engines and windshields, potentially leading to hazardous situations. Recognising the gravity of this risk, SVPIA has implemented an advanced bird management programme designed to mitigate the threat effectively.

Comprehensive Bird Hazard Management Programme

SVPIA’s bird management programme integrates cutting-edge technologies and innovative strategies to address the issue. The measures include targeted vegetation management, insect control, wildlife relocation, acoustic deterrence, and community engagement.

Vegetation and Insect Control

To reduce the attractiveness of the airport to birds, SVPIA employs a grass growth cycle management strategy. By utilising plant growth regulators, the airport maintains controlled grass heights, minimising insect infestations that attract birds. Additionally, advanced insect attraction technologies, such as Farrow’s light traps and black light traps, capture insects in significant quantities, further reducing bird food sources.

Anti-Perching and Wildlife Relocation

Customised anti-perching devices, built using Hyper Urban Bird Management technology, prevent birds from roosting on airport structures. This innovation has drastically reduced pigeon infestations by over 95 per cent. Moreover, problematic wildlife species, including five bird species, are safely relocated to designated areas, marking a pioneering step in scientific wildlife management.

Acoustic Deterrence and Community Engagement

SVPIA uses bioacoustics systems, installed on airport vehicles and runway peripheries, to deter birds through sound. This technology effectively discourages birds from entering critical airport zones.

Community engagement plays a vital role in bird strike mitigation. SVPIA educates local communities about the dangers of feeding birds and littering near the airport, fostering collaboration for a safer environment.

Adherence to DGCA Guidelines

All modules and techniques adopted by SVPIA comply with the guidelines provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This ensures that the airport’s bird hazard management initiatives align with industry standards, reinforcing its commitment to passenger and aircraft safety.

SVPIA’s pioneering efforts reflect its unwavering dedication to enhancing safety and delivering a secure, seamless travel experience. By implementing innovative and industry-leading solutions, the airport sets a benchmark for others in the country.

Under the management of Adani Airport Holdings Limited, SVPIA continues to drive excellence in aviation safety while contributing to sustainable and safe airport operations.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport’s initiatives underline the importance of proactive measures in aviation safety, positioning it as a leader in adopting innovative solutions to complex challenges.
