Ongoing heavy rainfall in several regions of Southern India, including Chennai, Shivamogga, Salem, Bengaluru, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, Tuticorin, and Rajahmundry, has significantly affected flight schedules. On a brighter note, the heavy rains subsided in most parts of northern Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, providing much-needed relief to residents. Chief Minister M K Stalin announced that food would be provided free of cost in Amma canteens across Chennai on October 16 and 17 to support vulnerable communities affected by the weather.
Stalin further stated that relief work is underway in the areas impacted by Tuesday’s downpours. The Greater Chennai Corporation has set up relief centres for those residing in low-lying areas, ensuring they receive essential support, including food.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a depression over the Bay of Bengal is currently about 360 km east-southeast of Chennai. The IMD anticipates that it will move west-northwest and may make landfall near Chennai early on October 17. As a result, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in several places, with winds reaching speeds of 40-60 km/h along the coast.
In light of these weather developments, fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea, and the public is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. As Southern India braces for continued rain, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents and travellers.
