A gas leak at Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur International Airport on Thursday (July 4) has left 39 people ill, as per a report in news agency ANI. According to the Selangor State Fire Department, fire services responded to a report indicating a chemical leak at an aircraft engineering facility distinct from the passenger terminal at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on July 4.
“A total of 39 victims suffered from dizziness and nausea,” local rescue officer Muhammad Nur Khairi Samsumin informed.
Authorities further detailed that one person required hospitalisation, while fourteen others were transported to the air disaster unit for treatment, according to the report.
All affected individuals are employees of three companies operating at the site. Officials emphasised there was no heightened risk to public safety, nor were travelers or flights impacted by the incident.
What was the source of gas leak?
Police identified the source of the gas leak as a neglected skid tank that had not been attended to for nine years.
Muhammad Nur specified that the gas involved was methyl mercaptan, an additive in liquefied petroleum gas to impart a smell resembling rotten cabbage, used to detect leaks.
