Flight operations in Delhi faced disruptions on Monday (November 18) as thick smog blanketed the national capital, reducing visibility significantly at Indira Gandhi International Airport. According to Flightradar24, over 160 flights, 118 departures and 43 arrivals, at Delhi Airport experienced delays due to the low visibility till 8.30 am. 

The average delays in departures was recorded at 22 minutes, as reported by the flight-tracking website. Furthermore, a total of seven flights were also cancelled in the morning at Delhi airport. Five flights were diverted from Delhi airport on Monday morning due to adverse weather conditions in the national capital, officials reported. Among the affected flights, four were rerouted to Jaipur, while one was redirected to Dehradun, the official confirmed.

Indigo issues travel advisory for air passengers

IndiGo issued a travel advisory urging passengers to prepare for potential delays caused by foggy conditions in Delhi. The airline recommended that travelers allow extra time for their journey and check their flight status before heading to the airport, in order to avoid any inconvenience caused by the reduced visibility. The advisory highlights the impact of fog on air traffic and suggests travelers stay informed to ensure smooth travel.

“Fog is currently affecting visibility in Delhi, which may result in slow-moving traffic and delays in flight schedules. We recommend allowing extra travel time and checking flight status before starting your journey. Safe travels!” the post on X mentioned.

Delhi airport implements ‘low visibility procedures’

Indira Gandhi International Airport has issued an advisory informing passengers to contact their airlines due to the implementation of low visibility procedures at the airport. This action comes in response to the deteriorating air quality and reduced visibility in Delhi, which could potentially disrupt flight schedules and operations. The advisory urges travelers to stay in touch with their respective airlines for updates on flight statuses and any changes to their travel plans.

“Low visibility procedures are in progress at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are presently normal. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information”, Delhi Airport said in a post on X.

Delhi AQI reaches ‘severe plus’ level

Delhi’s air quality deteriorated further on Monday morning, with a thick layer of smog covering several parts of the city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) plunged into the ‘severe plus’ category, with a reading of 483 recorded at 7 am, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. In addition to the alarming pollution levels, toxic foam was seen floating on the Yamuna River at Kalindi Kunj, exacerbating environmental concerns. Residents reported experiencing breathing difficulties and eye irritation due to the worsening air quality and pollution.
