Karnataka Infrastructure Minister M B Patil on Friday (March 7) announced that the state government has identified three potential locations for Bengaluru’s second airport and has submitted a proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for approval.
The proposed sites include two locations along Kanakapura Road near Harohalli and one on Kunigal Road in Nelamangala. Patil shared the update on ‘X,’ calling it a “bold step towards future-ready infrastructure” and emphasising the importance of enhancing Karnataka’s connectivity on a global scale.
“Bengaluru’s second airport: Three locations proposed to Centre–A bold step towards future-ready infrastructure. We have identified three potential locations for the city’s second international airport—two on Kanakapura Road near Harohalli and one on Kunigal Road in Nelamangala. A proposal has been sent to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation for approval,” Patil wrote on ‘X’.
He also noted that Bengaluru’s existing Kempegowda International Airport at Devanahalli, which has an exclusivity clause until 2033, is expected to reach its capacity of 100 million passengers by 2030. Given this projection, Patil stressed the urgency of planning a second airport well in advance, estimating that the project could take seven to eight years to materialise.
“With good intentions, we have started early preparations… If we start now, it will take seven to eight years,” he had said.
