As the stage is set for Aero India 2025, one of the most anticipated aerospace and defence exhibitions in the world, Swedish defence company Saab is ready to showcase its cutting-edge technology and strategic plans for the future.
The event, scheduled to take place from February 10 to 14 in Bangalore, promises to be an exciting glimpse into the evolving dynamics of air and defence capabilities. Central to Saab’s presence at Aero India 2025 will be the unveiling of the Full-Scale Replica (FSR) of the Gripen E, which is already generating significant interest.
On Thursday (Dec 12, 2024) the Gripen E FSR, currently on display as part of the Bangalore Security Dialogue, will take center stage during the Aero India show. Co-hosted by the Takshashila Institution and Dynamatic Technologies, the ongoing event offers an early look at Saab’s participation, setting the tone for its full exhibition in February.
Gripen E
Saab’s Gripen E is a testament to forward-thinking design, built to meet the demands of modern air forces with cutting-edge systems, sensors, weapons, and advanced technologies that deliver air superiority even in the most contested environments.
Kent Åke Molin, Head of the Gripen India Programme, expressed his enthusiasm about the upcoming show: “Today we kick-start our participation at Aero India 2025. We are delighted to be able to provide a preview of the Gripen E Full Scale Replica against the backdrop of the Bangalore Security Dialogues, and we hope to engage in meaningful dialogues during the session.”
This sets the tone for Saab’s intentions at Aero India 2025, where they aim to deepen their engagement with both Indian defence experts and global industry leaders.
The Gripen E, which features the powerful GE F414G engine, is designed for long-range missions and heavy payloads, with its ten hard-points allowing it to carry an array of advanced weaponry. Its AESA radar, InfraRed Search and Track System (IRST), and sophisticated electronic warfare and communication systems provide it with unmatched capabilities for both offensive and defensive operations. But what truly sets the Gripen E apart is its embedded AI technology, integrated into its cockpit for enhanced decision-making.
The Gripen E’s advanced cockpit features a Wide Area Display (WAD), which presents critical mission data in an intuitive format. This system supports pilots by streamlining complex tasks and enhancing coordination with other units in a tactical air operation. The future-oriented design ensures that Gripen E pilots can respond swiftly to dynamic battlefield conditions, giving them a decisive edge in combat.
In addition to showcasing its aircraft, Saab has made strides in India, securing approval from the Indian government for 100% ownership of an India-based operation. This will support the local production of the Carl Gustaf M4, aligning with India’s “Make in India” initiative and underscoring Saab’s commitment to the country’s defence needs.
AI & Saab
At Aero India 2025, Saab’s presence will highlight the growing integration of advanced technologies like artificial intelligence in defence systems. The Gripen E, with its AI-enabled cockpit and user-friendly interface, exemplifies how these innovations are reshaping modern combat aircraft. The aircraft’s advanced sensors, radar, and decision-support systems are not just about improving operational efficiency, but also about enhancing pilots’ ability to respond to rapidly evolving mission environments.
