A man freed after more than two-and-a-half years in prison for a fatal crash in a Toyota Camry is now suing Toyota Motor Corp.
Attorneys filed the complaint on Monday in federal court on behalf of Koua Fong Lee of St Paul, Minnesota, and members of his family.
Lee was sentenced to eight years in prison for the June 2006 crash that killed three people in St Paul. His case was reopened after problems surfaced with sudden acceleration in Toyotas. A judge granted him a new trial in August, and prosecutors dropped the case.
The lawsuit seeks damages in excess of USD 75,000.
Toyota said any unintended acceleration claims involving Lee’s car are “without merit.” It says his 2003 Camry wasn’t the subject of a recall.
