The law students at the Utkal University in Orissa have gone on the rampage demanding that cheating must be permitted in the examinations, otherwise they will lead a boycott! How about that? Small wonder India is the laughing stock of the world. Anywhere else in the world, something so utterly ludicrous would not arise even in the wildest of dreams but here, in this great culture of ours, the worst is tolerated and endorsed by those who rule us. Those idiotic students should be debarred from all colleges, universities and from the legal profession for life. One now understands why the legal profession has deteriorated so fundamentally ? law students want to cheat.
In the same vein, politicians with criminal records want to continue in public life and be an intrinsic part of the political system in an attempt to lead this country. It is evident why we as a nation have been left behind and are not taken seriously at all. Ironically, the only reason why the world looks at India for that split second is because one billion people potentially constitute a huge market in terms of commerce as well as opinion. Our only asset seems to be the oversized population!
Strangely, even the home minister has recently attacked the chief minister of Punjab for unearthing the corruption of the former CM of the state. This same BJP had pledged to rid the corrupt practices of the past but sadly it seems to be endorsing corruption in high places. CMs, their progeny et al can run amuck but the citizens cannot. Statements such as the one made by the home minister/deputy Prime Minister send the signal that corruption is protected as long as you prop up the regime.
This is horrible to say the least. It sets the lowest standards for this great country and reduces us to the worst of banana republics. Amarinder Singh is delving into the corruption of a former CM, and so he should. Citizens of India know well how corrupt their leaders are. They do not need to see cases in court being ?fixed?. There is not one single living individual in the cities, towns and villages of India alike who will deny this overriding reality. Foreign investors too have experienced horrific corruption in Bharat. This one fact needs no verification. But when top leaders are not willing to probe and punish, India?s future looks dismal. This kind of rajniti, to protect the corrupt because they support the government, is destructive and does not speak well of a government that professes to be straight.
The government happily orders CBI inquiries into the corruption of officials they choose in the Delhi Development Authority and other organisations, including the judiciary, but politicians need not be probed…that is ?vindictive?. More often than not, orders to break the rule come from the politicians. Frankly, all the members of Parliament and all the central government employees ? section officer upwards ? must be screened fully, like patients of SARS, before they are let loose in the public arena. That could help in restoring dignity and integrity in this polity. Only then will the citizenry indulge in ?civilised? practice and normal life.
Have we not descended into the gutter? Why are we not nauseated by what has throttled us? Does the power of money, muscle, goons and dons frighten us from forcing the clean-up? Has Bharat learned to survive this killer disease by adopting anarchy as its political strategy? Whenever I see VIPs, with armed guards flaunting their weapons in an open jeep following a white ambassador, I wonder what crime that ?protected? person must have committed to have made him so fearful. What are they all so scared about? What is their guilt? Why didn?t Gandhiji and Panditji go about with all the farcical paraphernalia?
President Bush needs that kind of security because he and his government have committed huge political crimes but what have our leaders done? Why can?t an example be set by the top-most leadership of this country? Drop all the trappings and reach out with honesty and integrity. The people will worship you. u
