The Centre has allocated Rs 300.35 crore under the plan Budget and Rs 1,849 crore under the non-plan Budget for the year 2009-10 for Chandigarh, said a spokesperson of the administration. He said that the plan allocations are primarily aimed at three major areas including human development, infrastructure and environment.
The allocation under these three areas stands at Rs 268.30 crore, which comes to 89.3% of the total plan allocation. A sum of Rs 89.03 crore (30%) is kept for human development, Rs 177.85 crore (59%) is provided for infrastructure and Rs 1.42 crore (0.5%) for environment. An allocation of Rs 40.73 crore (13.6%) has been kept under education and Rs. 43.64 crore (14.5%) under the medical and public health sector.
The spokesperson said that the non-plan Budget has increased mainly on account of the anticipated revision of pay scale of the employees. Of the total allocation, Rs 767.62 crore is meant for salaries of employees.
The provision for grant-in-aid to the Municipal Corporation is Rs 166.12 crore and Punjab University is Rs 34 crore. Another Rs 440.29 crore has been kept for the power sector, whereas for education, arts, sports and culture there is an allocation of Rs 275.89 crore.
The health sector gets Rs 95.77 crore and the Chandigarh Police and jails department Rs 164.46 crore. The allocation for the transport sector under the non-plan budget is Rs 129.16 crore.
The Budget surplus for the year 2009-10 has been projected at Rs 133.00 crore by the administration. The Budget surplus during the year 2008-09 has been Rs 623.50 crore.
