Former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam on Saturday stressed the need for quality research at the country’s institutes to immensely gain from the opportunities that are knocking at India ‘s doors today. Kalam was speaking at the 14 th convocation ceremony of one of the country’s premier industrial engineering and management institutes, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), here.

Seemingly busier than he was when president, Kalam said in the last nine months, he has visited 19 foreign universities, including 10 in the US , six in UK and three in Asia . “All these universities are concentrating on research,” said Kalam, adding, “Research and development, in turn, have enriched teaching.”

NITIE honoured 240 graduating students this year for courses including industrial engineering, industrial management, the first batch of information technology management (ITM) and industrial safety and environmental management (ISEM). The ceremony began with the academic procession that included Kalam, Subhash Awale, director of NITIE and other faculty members.
