Electronics giant Philips on Wednesday introduced a made-in-India light emitting diode (LED) bulb that is half the cost of similar bulbs available in the market. Priced at Rs 649, the bulb can last for 15 years, officials said. The LED bulb was designed and developed by the firm?s research centre in Noida with Indian conditions in mind. It is aimed at the consumer market, is 80% more energy efficient than a conventional bulb, and emits no ultra-violet and Infra-red radiation. Philips has marketed LED in the professional segment such as hospitality but is targeting the consumer market for the first time. ?It is the first lamp to be indigenously developed. It is the lowest price LED bulb in the world,? said Nirupam Sahay, senior director of marketing at Philips Lighting India. The executive added the bulb adheres to Indian challenges such as voltage fluctuations, energy spikes and intermittent power supply.
