Orwell had it right. All are equal, but some are more equal. Senior leaders of the DMK in Tamil Nadu have learnt this the hard way. The venue was a valedictory function of the party?s youth wing in Tirunelvelly. Party leaders, ministers among them, started to plonk themselves in front row seats, only to be ushered towards the back rows by party cadres. Being so senior, this had them looking quizzically at one another to gauge just who the prime seats might have been reserved for. They got their answer soon enough, once the party patriarch M Karuna-nidhi trooped in with his entire family in tow, including his grandson. It?s a ?disciplined? party, so there was no cluck-cluck here or cluck-cluck there, eeyai-yai-yo. But, yes, issuing serial numbers would?ve helped. Except that the ideology would have to make space for infinity?so that everyone can feel equidistant in some theoretical sense atleast.
MG load
What is covered with warts, overstuffed, rhymes with ugly toad and cannot be kissed overnight into better shape? Why, MG Road in Delhi … or, more accurately, from Mehrauli to Gurgaon. About a year ago, Eavesdropper was impressed with the speed with which the Delhi Metro project was rolling along towards the goal of linking this crazily expanding suburb to the capital. Now the road is turning into a dust-ridden worry path that makes it difficult keeping one?s eyes on the road, what with all those half-life-threatening objects swaying overhead from cranes. Did anyone read the safety manual?
