Snubbing the Gujarat government for its failure to ensure proper resettlement of the 2002 riots victims, the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) on Thursday summoned chief secretary of the state Sudhir Mankad and demanded a ?detailed status report? on the rehabilitation process.
The Commission visited the state last year to examine the rehabilitation status and said that the Narendra Modi government had failed to facilitate safe return of riot victims to their homes.
Observing that the victims were living in ?sub-human conditions?, the Commission had also told the state government to ?fulfil its constitutional responsibility?.
The chief secretary of the BJP-ruled state, however, told the Commission that a detailed status report would be prepared and submitted to the commission in September. Sources in the Commission told FE that Mankad reasoned that the government machinery ?is completely involved in the flood relief works? and this resulted in the delay in submitting the status report.
