Chandigarh, Puducherry and the three districts of Gujarat ? Porbandar, Mehsana and Gandhi Nagar have become country’s first completely banked cities having at least one bank account with each household.
Thanks Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first blockbuster social upliftment scheme after assuming office ? the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) ? these five centres competed the task of providing bank account to all ahead of its earlier target making these areas fully saturated under the new scheme.
The PMJDY is aimed at improving the lives of millions of India’s poor by bringing them into the financial mainstream. The scheme, launched on August 15, aims to bring 7.5 crore unbanked persons under the banking network by January 26, 2015.
As per an assesment done by the Mission Director of the scheme, 5.52 crore accounts have been opened upto October 7 and a deposit of Rs. 4268 crore have been mobilized under PMJDY so far.
To further accelerate the process of providing bank accounts to the unbanked the meeting emphasized the early issue of RuPay Debit Cards, e-KYC based account opening, Aadhaar seeding and the progress in survey made in the rural as well as urban areas.
The survey work was found to be satisfactory except in the states of Maharashtra and Haryana where this has been stopped in view of the Assembly elections.
