A mandate for the Congress would be a disaster for the Indian economy, according to BJP?s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani.

He said here on Wednesday that during the tenure of the Congress-led UPA government, the country had witnessed a record rise in inflation and prices of essential commodities. Worse, he said, the country had been facing a disastrous condition of joblessness.

Advani said it was the poor performance of the UPA government and not the global meltdown that was responsible for the dismal record on the economic front.

Iterating his demand for investigation into black money stashed by Indians in foreign banks, Advani said the Prime Minister had agreed to his proposal to raise the issue at the G-20 Summit in London. With powerful countries like the US putting pressure on the Swiss government and other tax-heaven countries to bring back black money to rescue the nation from financial crisis, India should also follow suit, Advani said.

According to him, the UPA had disintegrated to a point where it had ceased to exist as a pre-poll alliance. The TRS in Andhra Pradesh, the PMK and MDMK in Tamil Nadu, the RJD and Lok Janshakti in Bihar, and the SP in Uttar Pradesh have severed ties with the Congress. In contrast, the BJP has gained three new allies in the last three months?the AGP in Assam, the Rastriya Lok Dal in UP, and the Indian National Lok Dal in Haryana.

Advani, who had arrived here on Tuesday, addressed several elections meetings in the western part of the state besides one in Cuttack. He visited the tornado-devastated Rajkanika area of Kendrapara distrit before leaving for New Delhi.
