The parliamentary units of the CPI(M) and the CPI, which met here separately on Thursday, decided to give notice in Parliament under Section 193 to discuss the Indo-US nuclear deal.
According to sources, the Left would mount pressure on the government to prevent it from proceeding further with operationalising the agreement. They would also urge the government to withdraw from the final signing.
Making his party?s stand clear, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat told reporters at Thiruvananthapuram that the deal will be opposed in and outside Parliament.
Meanwhile, the CPI has assailed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh?s statement that the deal could not be re-negotiated.
?The Prime Minister does not have the last word in a multi-party government,? CPI?s leader in Lok Sabha Gurudas Dasgupta told reporters after the meeting of his party?s parliamentary committee. ?We will oppose the deal lock, stock and barrel. The agreement has to be viewed in the background of the lengthening shadow of American imperialism over India,? he added.
He also accused the government for making the common minimum programme (CMP) ?an obsolete peace of paper.? ?The government still has time to ponder over its lapses, as it has alienated the people with its policies,? he added.
Apart from this, the Left parties will demand the implementation of the Sachar Committee report on the status of the country?s Muslims and Srikrishna panel report on Mumbai riots.
The parties have reiterated that they will ?raise their voice? against the UPA government?s economic policies. ?Finance minister P Chidambaram is cooking up statistics to show that prices have come down,? Dasgupta said.
He criticised the government for ?cutting down? the days for Monsoon Session to 23. ?It seems the political leadership of the ruling combine is not interested in operationalising Parliament as set by the Constitution,? the senior CPI leader said.
