The CPI(M) on Monday said the Indo-US nuclear agreement should not be put into operation unless discussed in the winter session of Parliament scheduled in November. The party, reiterating its stand on the issue, however, said that the Left-UPA mechanism would continue to discuss various aspects of the deal including the Hyde Act and its implications on the foreign policy and ?security related matters?.

??We have put down our objections and they have replied to that. The process is going on but the government should not proceed till all issues are resolved at the meeting,?? CPI(M) general-secretary Prakash Karat told reporters after the meetings of the central committee and politburo. Evading the questions that whether the CPI(M) will withdraw the support, he said the CC has authorised the politburo to take ?appropriate measures? to see that the its stand is implemented.

Talking to FE, a senior CPI(M) leader later said that the party is asking just for a month?s time. ??Even the US is ready to wait. We don?t understand why the government is in a hurry,?? the leader said.

Apparently demonstrating that the party is in an election mood, the CC communique also listed out a chargesheet against the UPA government. ??The record of the last few months show that the UPA is callous about fulfilling its pro-people commitments in CMP. The government continues to promise opening up FDI to retail trade and taking further steps to allow foreign capital in the financial sector,?? the party said.

The central committee has also accused the UPA government of being a failure in controlling the prices. The CPI(M) also demanded probe into wheat import and the management of wheat stocks. ??It is indefensible that the government should pay as much as Rs 1,600 a quintal to foreign traders when it paid Indian farmers an MSP of Rs 850 a quintal.??
