CPM general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday advised AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi to study the history of Marxism, instead of blindly following the American model of capitalism. Karat was reacting to Rahuls recent remarks that Marxism is a dead idea and it is time West Bengal people should detach themselves from it.

Addressing a public function here, Karat said: Young generation leaders (including Rahul Gandhi) of Congress should know that even Jawaharlal Nehru used to talk about learning from Marxism. It is regrettable that these new leaders do not seem to know the history of Marxism.

The CPM general secretary said it was important to know Karl Marx and his ideology before criticising him. We are always opposed to neo-liberal policies and American imperialism, said Karat, adding that many young leaders did not even know who authored the Communist Manifesto. Karat said the Left movement would stay till peasants, workers and class struggle existed in society.

He advised the Centre to give greater autonomy to the people in Jammu and Kashmir to help resolve the present crisis in the Valley. Reiterating the partys stand on the Ayodhya dispute, the CPM general secretary urged all parties to respect the Allahabad High Court verdict on the title suit, due on September 24.

The CPM, which has a lone MLA in the Bihar Assembly, is likely to contest 30 seats in Bihar in alliance with other Left parties. This was Karats second tour to Patna in the last one month.
