If floods are threatening the kharif crop in Bengal, neighbouring Orissa is battling drought, putting its kharif crop, mostly paddy, in trouble.

According to an estimate by the National Agriculture Drought Assessment and Monitoring System (NADAMS), the kharif crop situation in 20 of the 30 districts in Orissa is grave. The NADAMS, which has surveyed the kharif crop position in Orissa through Hyderabad-based National Remote Sensing Centre, has stated that only Sundergarh and Sambalpur districts have recorded satisfactory kharif cultivation. The state revenue and disaster management minister, Surya Narayan Patro, said that kharif cultivation has been badly hit due to insufficient rainfall.
