Hyundai Motor India Ltd, India’s second-largest car manufacturer, is planning to double its exports this year, according to Arvind Saxena, senior vice-president for marketing and sales.

At present, the South Korean car manufacturer exports to 95 countries from India. It exports around 45% of its total production capacity of 6 lakh cars a year.

“Last year we exported 1.16 lakh cars and this year we are targeting 2.4 lakh cars,” said Saxena. Initially the target was to export 2.12 lakh cars but now it has been revised to 2.4 lakh.

The cars are mostly exported to the European Union, Africa, West Asia, South East Asia and Latin America. The models exported are the Getz, Santro, i10 and Accent.

Last year, Hyundai sold 2.2 lakh cars in India and is aiming for 3 lakh cars this year.

Saxena was here to launch an i10 model equipped with the new 16 valve, 1.2 litre Kappa engine. Initially, the new engine would be fitted on the Asta, Magna and Sportz variants only.

“If we find it successful we will consider some other models,” Saxena said.
