The flow of 7,44,507 cusecs of water in Yamuna river at Hathnikund barrage that passed between 3 am and 5 am on September 20 has broken the previous record of 7,09,000 cusecs recorded at Tajewala on September 3, 1978.

While stating this a spokesman of Haryana revenue department said all the district administrations along river Yamuna and authorities of Delhi Jal Board were informed of high flood in the river yesterday and today. Assistance of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) has also been sought.The field staff of Irrigation Department in Karnal, Panipat, Sonepat, Faridabad and Palwal had been alerted and all possible measures were being taken for protection of vulnerable sites. Round-the-clock vigil was being maintained to avoid any damage due to floods, he added.

The flood water is now reaching Panipat district. It was about 3 lakh cusecs at 11 am on Monday and the effect of flood is likely to reach Sonepat district by the late evening.

He said that the old Tajewala head works which was affected during the floods on September 8 and 9 had been reported to be damaged. Three bays of Tajewal headwork have further been damaged. Like previous flood on September 8 this flood water of river has entered agriculture land of 22 villages in Yamuna Nagar district. These villages included Kalesar, Baburambass, Mamdubas, Tapukamalpur, Punehri ,Baghwali,Jathlana and Sandhala-sandhali. This water would flow back into river Yamuna after the flood in river receded, he added.

The effect of this increased flood water has reached Karnal district and more than four lakh cusecs of water has been reported to be flowing in the river by 11 a.m. on September 20,2010 in Karnal district. However, where there is no embankment, flood water has started to spill and enter the agriculture land of few villages such as Chougam, Hansu Majra, Garhi Birbal, Garhpur Tapu, Palsora, Halwana, Nabiyabad, Japti Chhapra, Sayed Chhapra, Nagli, Dera Sikkligarh etc in Karnal district. This water which will flow back into river Yamuna after the flood in river recedes. No abadi area has sofar been affected.

A peak discharge of 6.07 lakh cusecs was observed on September 8 in river Yamuna at Hathnikund Barrage. This flood was supplemented with another 1 lakh cusecs of water discharged from Somb and Pathrala rivers totaling 7.07 lakh cusecs in river Yamuna.
