After Uva and Spark, General Motors (GM) is seriously considering to launch one more mini car under its famous Chevrolet platform. In order to capitalise on the overwhelming response to small cars in India, particularly for its Uva and Spark, GM will bring in one more mini car from its Pune plant, which is expected to go on stream in 2008, said P Balendran, vice-president (corporate affairs), General Motors India.
Speaking to FE here on Thursday, he said, ?Going by the current trend across the globe and particularly in India, we need to have a new car once in every two to three years and GM is planning towards introducing another mini car.? ?We have targeted to achieve 10% market share by 2010 with an annual capacity of 200,000 cars. Out of which 65% of the sales will come from small cars and we would like to have at least one more small car to achieve the desired results.? Currently, GM holds 3% market share, he added.
?Our objective is to exploit and expand the brand equity of Chevrolet in India over the years. Ever since we reintroduced the Chevrolet brand in 2003, the company has seen a tremendous growth in sales – from 15,000 units to 35,000 and we have increased the target to 65,000 units in 2007.?
According to him, ?The Pune plant, which is under construction, will cater to small cars only. The plant will support the increasing demand for Spark and will subsequently add a new mini car. The initial capacity has been set at 140,000 cars per annum which will be scaled upto 300,000 units as and when demand for its small cars grows.?
