The Congress party has opposed the all-party resolution, which has requested Tata Motors and ancillary units to resume work as soon as possible. Nine Left Front constituents have supported the resolution and the only opposition party to lend support to it was the BJP.

The main opposition party, Trinamool Congress, and Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI), did not participate in the all party meeting.

The resolution has urged people to let construction of the plant proceed in a peaceful and congenial environment. The resolution also requested the state government, Tata Motors and ancillary units that besides adequate compensation, there should be planned development programme for the rehabilitation and development of the area.

The Congress party was led by WBPCC executive vice-president Subrata Mukherjee and senior leader Manash Bhuiyan.

“We did not agree with the all party resolution. We believe that some part of the ancillary units have to be given to the farmers. We strongly feel 1000 acres cannot be kept completely within the project area as some part has to be sacrificed according to the understanding,” Mukherjee said after the meeting.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said it is sad that the Congress Party did not understand the integrated nature of the plant.
