Apart from wooing investors from within the country, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), has initiated efforts to attract investors from the US to core sectors such power, infrastructure and aviation in UP.

Organising an interactive session with Shana Sherry, economic officer of the US embassy, who was in the city, CII approached the US embassy to woo the American investors to invest in the state. It impressed upon them that there was unlimited opportunity for investment in these core sectors, in which the state is abysmally lagging.

?We have submitted a proposal to her underlying the needs of the state such as power and highways projects. We are suffering from a severe paucity of these three core requirements,? says Anil Shukla, head CII, Uttar Pradesh State Council.

For the aviation sector, the CII has asked the US official to rope in investment in the form of US airlines operating from Varanasi and Lucknow. ?We have no direct flights from Varanasi to international destinations. Varanasi is a big export hub and more flights will boost handicrafts exports . Even Lucknow, too, has very few international flights. At present, we are connected to the Arab world only, he said.
