Indian multinational Videocon Industries Ltd is keen on acquiring Mirc Electronics, promoted by the Mirchandani family, owners of the Onida brand of CTVs ?only if there?s a united approach from Mirc?s three promoters namely Gulu L Mirchandani, Vijay J Mansukhani and Sonu L Mirchandani.
On the company?s acquisition plans, Venugopal Dhoot, chairman of the Videocon Group said: ?I would be interested in the deal only if all three Mirchandani brothers jointly approach me. I do not want to interfere in their family feud.?
When contacted, Gulu Mirchandani, chairman and managing director, Mirc Electronics Ltd could not comment on the issue.
According to industry sources, the family feud between the two bothers Gulu and Sonu Mirchandani, and their brother in-law Vijay Mansukhani may lead to further complications in the sell out of the company. It was on on
January 1, 1981 that Mirc Electronics Private Ltd was incorporated. And today it is a major player in the consumer durables industry in India.
In addition to domestic acquisitions, Videocon is also looking at opportunities to acquire brands in global markets. ?We are open for acquisitions both in domestic as well as international markets. My vision is to sustain our stand as the third largest manufacturer of colour picture tubes across the globe,? he added. It was in the early eighties that through a technical tie up with Toshiba Corporation of Japan, Dhoot launched his first color television Videocon in India.
To gain high visibility for its brands, Videocon is increasing its ad budget by 20% this fiscal.
Interestingly, the company has just launched a high-voltage television campaign featuring MS Dhoni and Shah Rukh Khan who play the role of long-lost brothers from V family.
?We are increasing our ad budget from Rs 120 to 144 crore to promote our brands. With this move, we want to improve our sales performance by 20 % too ?said Dhoot.
According to Dhoot, the company plans to continue with Dhoni and Shah Rukh Khan as its brand ambassadors.? These two are leaders in their chosen fields,? he said.
