The Board of Approval for special economic zones will meet in Delhi on December 12 to consider 36 proposals, including those by state-run steel firm SAIL, real estate firm DLF and drug maker Dr Reddy’s Laboratories.
The BoA, headed by Commerce Secretary Gopal Pillai, was earlier scheduled to meet tomorrow but the meeting had to be postponed since it coincided with the India-EU Summit to be held in the capital.
Sources indicated that BoA was postponed to December 12 since senior Commerce Ministry officials will attend the Summit. European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson would also be present in the Summit.
Among the proposals listed for the BOA meeting is a 112.34 hectare steel zone by SAIL Salem SEZ Pvt Ltd at Salem in Tamil Nadu. Information Technology zones by DLF Commercial Developers, Aachvis Softech and Unitech Hitech spread over 10 hectare each in Noida are also on the agenda. The proposals were deferred in earlier BoA meetings since the developers did not have land in possession.
Dr Reddy’s Laboratories’ 106 hectare pharma zone in Andhra Pradesh and a 12-hectare gems and jewellery zone at Dadra and Nagar Haveli by AEC Marketing is also listed for consideration of the Board.
Sengadu Projects’ 1,000-hectare multi-product zone in Tamil Nadu and eight proposals by Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) in Nanguneri in Tamil Nadu totaling an area of about 650 hectare would also be taken up.
So far, the government has accorded formal approval to 405 SEZs, out of which 168 have been notified covering an area of over 22,600 hectares.
