The BJP on Monday launched an aggressive attack on the government on the spectrum controversy, bringing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh directly into the line of fire.
Leader of opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, spearheaded the BJP offensive against the Manmohan Singh government charging that the alleged irregularities in the allotment of wireless radio spectrum and licences by the telecom ministry to private operators in 2007 was the ?largest scam in independent India?.
Jaitley criticised comments made by the PM yesterday. ?I don’t think the Prime Minister should intervene when the investigation is on,? said Jaitley.
Jaitley accused Raja of giving undue benefit to some real estate companies, who had bagged the 2G contracts at low prices and sold them within a year at phenomenally high prices. ?The minister’s contention that the Trai had recommended this is wholly erroneous because the Trai had recommended that the entry fee determined in 2001 is not the realistic price for obtaining the license,? he said.
