As the winter session of Parliament set to be stormy, the Opposition NDA on Monday made it clear that no going back is possible on the demand of debate on Nandigram issue in both the Houses. However, the CPI(M) said it will not allow a debate on the issue as it is a ?state matter?, and the government claiming that it is trying to find a middle path to end the stalemate.
Earlier on Monday, the question hour in both the Houses were disrupted and adjourned for the day subsequently without transacting any business as the BJP raised Nandigram issue. With the BJP members demanding an adjournment motion on the issue and the CPI(M) members protesting it, ruckus followed in both the Houses.
??The BJP is frustrated that it could not form a government in Karnataka. They are venting it out in Parliament,?? CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury told newsmen. Responding to the BJP?s demand for a debate on Nandigram, he said: ??There is no precedence that a state law and order subject is discussed in Parliament. If the BJP want to have a discussion under the rules, they should link it up with debates on SEZs or Maoist violence.?? However, he added that the CPI(M) is not objected to a discussion on Nandigram but is against the violation of rules and procedures of Parliament.
Countering the CPI(M), the BJP’s deputy leader in Lok Sabha VK Malhotra said that the CPI(M) and the government was trying to dilute the issue. “We will not accept the proposal to discuss the matter in a larger canvas, making it either an SEZ issue or a Maoist violence. Discussion on Nandigram must precede before any business to be transacted in the Houses,” Malhotra added.
The government, meanwhile, said that it is expecting the Opposition leader’s response on the possibility of a joint motion, which condemns the Nandigram issue and the recent Maoist violence in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. “There is an attempt to draft a motion to be moved in the LS on Tuesday in consultation with the leader of the House and the leader of the Opposition. We are still waiting for the response of the Opposition leader on this,” parliamentary affairs minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi said.
