Global patents offices will now have access to India’s traditional knowledge (TK) digital library, subject to a non-disclosure clause.

The Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval for authorising the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCIR)of the Centre for Scientific & industrial Research (CSIR) to sign the non-disclosure agreement with international patents offices.

The library documents codified traditional knowledge on India’s traditional medicine systems in patents application format in five international languages. The library is designed to thwart unfair overseas patenting by making use of such traditional knowledge.

It is hoped that the library will prevent misappropria- tion of TK information particularly with respect to traditional medicines such as ayurveda, unani, siddha and yoga at international patents offices. The non-disclosure pact with the International patents offices would be negotiated without deviating from the following core principles, information and broadcasting minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said.
