Kolkata, Mar 5 New Zealand Natural, a premium ice cream franchise network under desserts producer Emerald Foods Ltd, opened its first standalone outlet in Kolkata on Wednesday.

The company, which has over 160 outlets across Australia, New Zealand, Korea, the United Kingdom, Indonesia and Singapore, plans to open at least 10 outlets in Kolkata in the next five months.

The brand specialises in products that don't have artificial flavours, colours, animal fat-based emulsifiers and gelatin.

"We have planned to open two standalone outlets, on Ballygunge Circular Road and Judges Court Road. This is apart from plans to set up at least four parlor outlets in city malls," said Himanshu Maheshwari, director of Manju Enterprises Pvt Ltd, the master franchise for New Zealand Natural in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

He said there would be six standalone outlets in all, apart from four ice cream parlors in malls in Kolkata.

"The target footfall for the Kolkata outlet is around 200 a day," he said.

"To attract more young people, we plan to introduce the hookah in two days," he said.

The brand offers "frozen fruit flavoured yogurt that is 97% fat-free, sorbet that is 99% fat-free, and no-added-sugar ice cream for diabetics."

Maheshwari said the Wood Street outlet, defined as a "high street lounge," was set up at a cost of about Rs 20 lakh.

On plans for the eastern region, Maheshwari said, "Our immediate plans in the east involve the setting up of standalone outlets in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Guwahati."

Talking about a pan-India presence, he said, "We will be setting up outlets in Bangalore, Mangalore, Coimbatore, Cochin, Pondicherry and Goa by this August."

The company has outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Amritsar, Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Vadodara.
